On July 25, 2006, my husband was setting a boom lift for high painting job. We started our own business 2 years ago. He did everything the rental company told him, and the next thing I knew he was screaming bloody murder. This 2 ton piece of equipment malfunctioned and drug him down thru the yard/road, then ran over his right side. He had a huge gash in his right hand (needed 25 stitches), numerous abrasions/cuts on his back/both legs/both arms, dislocated and broke his right hip (3 screws put in), collasped his right lung, smashed his liver, and tore his right kidney into 3 pieces. He spent 7 days in Trauma ICU, where we didn't know if he was going to live or not. We did not have insurance, due to it was too expensive. We do remodeling and home repairs. People that started out as customers at one time, ended up being really good friends. They sent us some money to help out while he was at home recouperating, which took months. I am unable to work due a botched back surgery 12 years ago. I couldn't touch the doctor due to all this medical malpractice insurance that was in the news. No other doctor would testify against him. Now I am unable to work due to all the damage he did, and I am on expensive pain medications for the rest of my life. We hired an attorney to handle his case, but it could take years to settle. We were almost out of debt completely when this happened, now we have medical bills exceeding $100,000.00. Most have been turned over to collection agencies and I can't take the phone calls or stress anymore. We applied for assistance, but here in York, if you are white and need help-forget it. We would do anything in the world for anyone if possible, and we didn't deserve this. I am trying to help my husband do some of this work, but it is really hard on both of us. The doctors told him he will need a complete hip replacement in the next 10 years. He also just got over having brochitis. Now we have to watch him due to his lung being collapsed. If he gets sick enough, his lung can collapse again. We have been together for 18 years, and both come from families that are really messed up and can't help. We also have 2 dogs and 5 cats, all of which we have had for at least 7 years-there is no way we can let them go. We just want to be able to pay our bills and have enough to eat. Anything that anyone can do to help would greatly be appreciated. I don't know what else to do. Please help!!
